Animation: Mechanisms of NNRTI Resistance
The ability of viral reverse transcriptase enzyme to convert viral RNA into viral DNA can be blocked with NNRTI drugs, although resistance to this mechanism can be acquired by the HIV virus. This animation describes how mutations acquired by the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme can effectively prevent NNRTI drugs from being able to bind to it. This allows the reverse transcription of viral DNA to proceed unimpeded.
